Sample Answer
Rivers are the source of life and food for many of the earth’s creatures. And rivers provide not only sustain life for humans but also for flora and fauna .In my country , there are countless rivers. But here I would like to elaborate about a predominant river in my hometown. It is known by ‘ Beas River ‘ in my hometown Ludhiana. There is a myth that it was named after Rishi Viyas. Beas river rises in the Himalayas in central Himachal Pradesh state and flows to the western Punjab state. The river serves as a source of fresh water to all the cities , towns and villages that fall in its course. It not only provides the water for livelihood but also massive provider of myriad advantages. The river adds the natural beauty to the area, attract tourism and act as a solid transportation medium. Apart from this , it helps to support the ecosystem by helping in the functioning of water cycle. The total length of the river is 470 Km approximately and terminates by merging with Salty river . This river is helpful for diverting water through open channel to generate power. However , these days excess of industrial and agricultural wastes are being dumped in the rivers , making it toxic. Other causes include dumping of plastics and household garbage, bathing in rivers, washing of clothes, usage of soaps and detergents, discharging of the deceased after cremation, release of feces etcetera that contaminate rivers to an extent that it becomes unhygienic for usage and cannot be treated. The atrocious incidence of year 2018 , when countless fishes and marine creatures were found vanished due pollution from nearby sugar mill. Even later on , sugar mill was fined with Rs 5 crore for creating such a huge devastation. However , this ecological damage is irreversible but we must try to preserve the water sources and purity of the water.
