Nowadays, people seem more inclined to engage themselves in reading for myriad purposes – be it to acquire knowledge, to learn languages or relieve their stress. Books transport us to the world within the pages, which is entirely different from the real one. Great writers of all the times play with the words to create their masterpieces which can impel people to read them.
I have been an avid reader since childhood and have read umpteen books of various genres like classic literary, fantasy, horror etc, out of which I enjoyed reading a novel by Arundhati Roy the most. I came to know about her when she received the Booker Prize for her debut novel named The God Of Small Things in 1997. This book portrayed the evils of casteism and discrimination that prevail in Indian society. The content was so impressive that I became absorbed, oblivious to the passage of time.
Since then, I have been a big fan of her and admire her because of her forthright and intrepid personality. She is not only one of the greatest writers of our country, but also a democrat, a political activist, a social worker, a humanist. How good as a human being she is can be judged with her deeds like donating the money and royalties from her book for social welfare. She is awarded with several accolades, apart from the Booker Prize, which include the National Film Award for Best Screenplay, the Sahitya Akademi Award, The Norman Mailer Prize, Lannan Foundation’s Cultural Freedom Award and many more. She has also been listed in Time’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2014.
I want to meet her to find more about her as an individual and a renowned writer, mainly where do she get her inspiration from, how do she get these ideas and how does she manage to use the simple words to frame such impactful content. I respect her for whoever she is and her simple mantra of following what one wants to, without giving any second thoughts.
